10 Ways to Get Rich- Warren Buffett’s secrets

10 Ways to Get Rich- Warren Buffett’s secrets

With an estimated fortune of $62 billion, Warren Buffett is the richest man in the entire world. In 1962, when he began buying stock in Berkshire Hathaway, a share cost $7.50. Today, Buffett, 78, is Berkshire’s chairman and CEO, and one share of the company’s class A stock is worth close to $119,000. He credits his astonishing success to several key strategies, which he has shared with writer Alice Schroeder. She spent hundreds of hours interviewing the Sage of Omaha for the new authorized biography The Snowball.

1. Reinvest your profits

When you first make money, you may be tempted to spend it. Don’t. Instead, reinvest the profits. Buffett learned this early on. In high school, he and a pal bought a pinball machine to put in a barbershop. With the money they earned, they bought more machines until they had eight in different shops. When the friends sold the venture, Buffett used the proceeds to buy stocks and to start another small business. By age 26, he’d amassed $174,000—or $1.4 million in today’s money. Even a small sum can turn into great wealth.

2. Be willing to be different

Don’t base your decisions upon what everyone is saying or doing. When Buffett began managing money in 1956 with $100,000 cobbled together from a handful of investors, he was dubbed an oddball. He worked in Omaha, not on Wall Street, and he refused to tell his partners where he was putting their money. People predicted that he’d fail, but when he closed his partnership 14 years later, it was worth more than $100 million. Instead of following the crowd, he looked for undervalued investments and ended up vastly beating the market average every single year. To Buffett, the average is just that—what everybody else is doing. To be above average, you need to measure yourself by what he calls the Inner Scorecard, judging yourself by your own standards and not the world’s.

3. Never suck your thumb

Gather in advance any information you need to make a decision, and ask a friend or relative to make sure that you stick to a deadline. Buffett prides himself on swiftly making up his mind and acting on it. He calls any unnecessary sitting and thinking “thumb-sucking.” When people offer him a business or an investment, he says, “I won’t talk unless they bring me a price.” He gives them an answer on the spot.

4. Spell out the deal before you start

Your bargaining leverage is always greatest before you begin a job—that’s when you have something to offer that the other party wants. Buffett learned this lesson the hard way as a kid, when his grandfather Ernest hired him and a friend to dig out the family grocery store after a blizzard. The boys spent five hours shoveling until they could barely straighten their frozen hands. Afterward, his grandfather gave the pair less than 90 cents to split. Buffett was horrified that he performed such backbreaking work only to earn pennies an hour. Always nail down the specifics of a deal in advance—even with your friends and relatives.

5. Watch small expenses

Buffett invests in businesses run by managers who obsess over the tiniest costs. He once acquired a company whose owner counted the sheets in rolls of 500-sheet toilet paper to see if he was being cheated (he was). He also admired a friend who painted only the side of his office building that faced the road. Exercising vigilance over every expense can make your profits—and your paycheck—go much further.

6. Limit what you borrow

Living on credit cards and loans won’t make you rich. Buffett has never borrowed a significant amount—not to invest, not for a mortgage. He has gotten many heartrending letters from people who thought their borrowing was manageable but became overwhelmed by debt. His advice: Negotiate with creditors to pay what you can. Then, when you’re debt-free, work on saving some money that you can use to invest.

7. Be persistent

With tenacity and ingenuity, you can win against a more established competitor. Buffett acquired the Nebraska Furniture Mart in 1983 because he liked the way its founder, Rose Blumkin, did business. A Russian immigrant, she built the mart from a pawnshop into the largest furniture store in North America. Her strategy was to undersell the big shots, and she was a merciless negotiator. To Buffett, Rose embodied the unwavering courage that makes a winner out of an underdog.

8. Know when to quit

Once, when Buffett was a teen, he went to the racetrack. He bet on a race and lost. To recoup his funds, he bet on another race. He lost again, leaving him with close to nothing. He felt sick—h e had squandered nearly a week’s earnings. Buffett never repeated that mistake. Know when to walk away from a loss, and don’t let anxiety fool you into trying again.

9. Assess the risks

In 1995, the employer of Buffett’s son, Howie, was accused by the FBI of price-fixing. Buffett advised Howie to imagine the worst- and best-case scenarios if he stayed with the company. His son quickly realized that the risks of staying far outweighed any potential gains, and he quit the next day. Asking yourself “and then what?” can help you see all of the possible consequences when you’re struggling to make a decision—and can guide you to the smartest choice.

10. Know what success really means

Despite his wealth, Buffett does not measure success by dollars. In 2006, he pledged to give away almost his entire fortune to charities, primarily the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He’s adamant about not funding monuments to himself—no Warren Buffett buildings or halls. “I know people who have a lot of money,” he says, “and they get testimonial dinners and hospital wings named after them. But the truth is that nobody in the world loves them. When you get to my age, you’ll measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you actually do love you. That’s the ultimate test of how you’ve lived your life.”

Inside Obama’s Classified Smartphone, Top-Secret P.D.A.

Posted on 26 January 2009. Filed under: AROUND SABAH | Tags: , , , , , , |

pc-magazine_1232916155101

President Obama is keeping his BlackBerry, according to the White House press office. While he’ll be able to keep in touch with some personal friends using the device, if he wants to do secret government business he’ll need one of two Windows CE smartphones: the Sectera Edge or the L3 Guardian.

The Edge and the Guardian are the result of an $18 million, NSA-sponsored program to develop a top-secret smart phone, according to Randy Siegel, Microsoft’s lead enterprise mobility strategist.

Most BlackBerrys and Windows Mobile devices can work with “sensitive, but unclassified” data, according to Tom Liggett, the Sectera Edge product manager at General Dynamics. Those smart phones work with the FIPS 140-2 standard, which encrypts both data traffic and voice calls to a certain extent. And there are a lot of government functions, even in war, that aren’t classified. In Iraq, for instance, FIPS 140-2-certified Windows Mobile devices are used for battle triage, roadside bomb detection, and even as sniper aids, Siegel said.

But about 300,000 Americans have access to a secret, controlled Internet called SIPRNet, the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network. What’s on there? It’s classified. And the Edge and the Guardian are the only smartphones that can tap into it.

“The BlackBerry device and the Windows Mobile devices currently are not cleared for SIPRNet communications,” Siegel said. “This is the type of communication that a General Petraeus is giving, or many State Department officials, or many DHS officials.”

To make voice calls, for instance, the Edge uses an encryption protocol called SCIP, the Secure Communications Interoperability Protocol. It runs on any of the four national cell-phone carriers’ – you can actually switch the cellular module out by hand – but the calls are encrypted end-to-end, so that they can only be decrypted by another SCIP phone.

All the data on the device is encrypted using “NSA Type 1 algorithms,” which are forbidden to be used by civilians, Liggett said. This is real spy-movie stuff.

The Edge runs Windows CE, not Windows Mobile. Windows CE is the underlying kernel of Windows Mobile, but the Edge has more secure applications lying on top than the standard Windows Mobile suite. It can still do most of the things Windows Mobile devices do, Liggett said, including push email with Microsoft Exchange servers, playing media through Windows Media Player and editing Microsoft Word documents. (Yes, the government uses Microsoft Exchange, apparently.) Defense department users wanted something that looked like their Windows PCs, Liggett said.

The Edge can also switch to an unclassified mode. How it does the trick is, apparently, classified. But by pressing a button, you can instantly call up entirely separate “classified” and “unclassified” systems. Each system has its own calendar, applications, data and voice calling. The system you aren’t using waits in the background, ready for action with the press of a button. That would prevent Obama from having to carry a separate BlackBerry to talk to his friends and family.

We can’t get an Edge in for review. You need a security clearance to request one. If you’ve got one, though, prices start at $3300 and head down from there for bulk purchases.

Obama May Carry Top-Secret P.D.A.

Updated 5:50 p.m.: Removed references to the Freedom of Information Act, which does not apply to the President or his immediate staff.

Nobody’s saying anything official or on the record about this, but reports popping up all across the Web indicate that while President Obama may be able to keep a mobile phone/e-mail device while in office, that device may be something more exotic than a BlackBerry from Research in Motion.

(Cue James Bond theme.)

The nation’s e-mailer in chief may be carrying something called a Sectéra Edge, which is made by the military contractor General Dynamics (you know, the submarine people). The product description reads: “Developed for the National Security Agency’s Secure Mobile Environment Portable Electronic Device (SME PED) program, the Sectéra Edge is certified to protect wireless voice communications classified Top Secret and below as well as access e-mail and Web sites classified Secret and below.”

The Sectéra looks like most P.D.A.’s, and operates like one when in normal mode. But a press of a button on the front of the device engages “classified mode” (for added effect, the screen background turns red when this mode is activated). It works on GSM and CDMA networks (AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint support the device, according to the company’s Web site), and will be able to get on Wi-Fi networks sometime in the third quarter of this year. It operates on a Windows Mobile platform.

For there to be secure communications between two parties, both must have a device that conforms to the necessary encryption protocols. That can include portable units like the Edge, but also landline phones and computers. Mobile calls or e-mail messages between Mr. Obama and Michelle Obama’s civilian P.D.A. would most likely have to take place in nonsecure mode, as family members of the president rarely have the necessary security clearance to warrant such a device.

Another thing that makes the Sectéra Edge fairly thin on the ground: each unit costs $3,350. It is unclear if its price drops to $19.99 with a two-year contract, but it seems unlikely.

awangbinting,blogspot,com (tulisan terbaru bersama dr Bangang)

Datu Pengiran Awang Binting Pengiran Salleh, whose company Gemilang Mirza Sdn Bhd which was raided by Bank Negara on Tuesday on suspicion of illegal deposit taking and money laundering activities, said his company was based on the profit distribution of sales of the company’s products.

“I forwarded the company concept to Bank Negara and they sent me a letter saying that the sale of my products was under the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

“I was also told to be familiar with legal acts regarding the concept of my company and I found that there was no act that says my company concept was illegal,” he told a media conference here today.

Awang Binting also said he referred the company concept to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and was told Gemilang Mirza was an example to other companies in producing more entrepreneurs.

On Tuesday, Bank Negara carried out the raid at the company’s premises in Papar following complaints received from the public.

The company is being investigated under Section 25(1) Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA), which carries a fine not exceeding RM10 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both, and Section 4(1) of Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 (AMLATFA), which carries a fine not exceeding RM5 million or imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.

Untuk makluman semua forumer, Si Binting ni sebenarnya menjadi korban oleh orang2 pintar disekelilingnya seperti anak2 buahnya dan saudara mara beliau ( termasuk projek D ). Kalau sesiapa yang mengetahui tentang si Binting ni dia tu nak kesat hingus pun tak pandai sebab sekolah setakat darjah 6 aje.

Sekarang kononnya GM ni satu syarikat perkongsian keuntungan.

Astagafirullah……. matilah kamu orang semua kalau begini.

Awang binting never failed to amaze me with his severe stupidity.

BNM wrote:

“I forwarded the company concept to Bank Negara and they sent me a letter saying that the sale of my products was under the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.”

I cant think of anything else of what is more appropriate action of BNM than asking Mua Buntal to refer his ponzi concept to the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. The sales of any products surely under jurisdiction of this ministry as Gemilang Mirza Sdn. Bhd. isn’t a financial company, neither it is a security company.

BNM wrote:

When you said that there was no act says your company concept was illegal, you just stating how ignorant you’re as a former bus ticket conductor. That’s to say how stupid you’re Awang Binting. As far as deposit taking is concerned – its damn illegal in BAFIA 1989 25 (1).

Honestly, GM is dead. I have no more intention to play with a dead ponzi.

Awang Binting is just a scumbag, a beggar. And those punters who worship Awang Binting are ninkimpoops and predestined to HELL.

Investment firm boss threatens to sue BNM

Kota Kinabalu: Gemilang Mirza Sdn Bhd (GMSB) Managing Director Ag Binting Pg Salleh insisted Friday that his company is running a legal business and will take legal action against Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) for Wednesday’s raid on his Papar office.

He claimed to have necessary documents to prove that relevant government agencies had supported his business.

“Being the founder, the GMSB is running its business legitimately,” he told reporters, Thursday.

BNM raided the GMSB office on suspicion of illegal collection of deposits and money laundering following public complains. Relevant assets and documents were seized for investigations.

The raid was conducted under section 25(1) of the Banking and Financial Institution Act 1989 (BAFIA) and section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financial Act 2001 (AMLATFA).

Section 25(1) of the BAFIA 1989 prohibits any person from receiving, taking or accepting deposits without having a valid license while section 4(1) of AMLATFA 2001 prohibits any person from engaging in, or attempting to engage, or abetting the commission of the money laundering activities.

According to Ag Binting, thousands have benefited from GMSB’s profit sharing concept and none had complained of not receiving dividends since his company began operations.

He reiterated that his company’s activities mainly revolved around producing its own brand of produce and the people were investing jointly on “a profit sharing concept”.

Last year Ag Binting told Daily Express in an interview that GMSB reaped profits of between 50-60 per cent from the sale of their products and Ag Binting said his investors enjoyed profit sharing of between 10-12pc every month.

Ag Binting claimed that at one time GMSB had about 30,000 investors.

However, along the way the number reduced to 25,000.

On the amount, he said people were investing in the region of anywhere from RM5,000 to RM50,000. On how much GMSB had collected from investors, he revealed it was in the region of up to RM3 million.

However, he declined to reveal the amount of money that was reported missing in GMSB’s bank account. He had lodged a report at the Papar police station last Sunday about the missing money.

He said the missing money was an internal matter involving his family and that the case was considered closed.

On how he would face his investors since BNM had frozen all his bank accounts as well as properties, Ag Biniting said he urged all his investors to be clam, patient and understand the situation and problem he faced now.

“After BNM had completed their investigations I promise to find a way to pay back the investors,” he said, showing a book containing signatures of his investors expressing support for him and GMSB.

Maksud Subjudice: while a matter is under judicial consideration newspaper comment on the case is prohibited because the matter has not yet been decided by the Court and is still debatable.
Awg Binting a.k.a Mua Buntal.

DAILY EXPRESS NEWS

Firm: Funds have gone missing
09 January, 2009
Kota Kinabalu: A Papar-based company involved in an investment scheme has asked police to investigate the disappearance of funds from their bank account.

Papar Police Chief, DSP Nek Zaidi Zakaria confirmed a report was lodged by Gemilang Mirza Sdn Bhd Managing Director Ag Binting Ag Salleh last Sunday.

However, he declined to elaborate, pointing out that investigations have been handed over to the Commercial Crime Investigation Department.

Gemilang Mirza is an investment firm that adopts a business partnership concept, with investors receiving monthly share profits through sales of their own brand of products, Ag Binting said in a Daily Express report last year.

BNM raid Papar investment firm
14 January, 2009
Kota Kinabalu: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has raided the premises of a so-called investment scheme firm, Gemilang Mirza Sdn Bhd, in Papar, on suspicion of illegal collection of deposits and money laundering activities.

According to a statement, BNM stormed the company’s premises, Tuesday, following public complaints. Relevant assets and documents of the company were seized for further investigations.

The raid was conducted under Section 25(1) of the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 (BAFIA) and Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001 (AMLATFA).

Section 25(1) of the BAFIA 1989 prohibits any person from receiving, taking or accepting deposits without having a valid license while Section 4(1) of AMLATFA 2001 prohibits any person from engaging in, or attempting to engage in, or abetting the commission of money laundering activities.

A person or company found guilty under Section 25(1) of Bafia would be fined not more than RM10 million or jailed not more than 10 years, or both.

On the other hand, the guilty party under Section 4(1) of AMLATFA will be handed a fine not exceeding RM5 million or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

“The public are advised to be cautious of investment schemes promoted in the Internet, through phone calls or seminars by individuals or companies not licensed or authorised by BNM to accept deposits or to conduct foreign currency dealings,” the statement said.

A list of all licensed institutions authorised to accept deposits is available on BNM’s website at http://www.bnm.gov.my.

Consumer Association of Sabah and Labuan (Cash) Datuk Patrick Sindu recently criticised BNM for not taking serious action against those involved in get-rich-quick schemes in Sabah.

He said it was an open secret that in areas like Beaufort and here, companies have been collecting cash from the public purportedly as investment with the promise of dividends or profits on weekly or monthly basis.

Investment firm boss threatens to sue BNM
17 January, 2009

Soalan-soalan Lazim mengenai Skim Cepat Kaya

Posted on 14 January 2009. Filed under: AROUND SABAH, Pelan Perniagaan, peluang perniagaan, Pendapatan Aktif | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Versi mesra pencetak | Hantar artikel kepada rakan

  1. Apakah Skim Cepat Kaya?

      Urus niaga mata wang asing haram

  3. Bagaimanakah untuk mengesan Skim Cepat Kaya?
      • Orang berkenaan (individu, syarikat atau organisasi) menerima, mengambil atau menyetujuterima deposit daripada orang awam tidak mempunyai lesen di bawah seksyen 6(4) Akta Bank dan Institusi-institusi Kewangan 1989;
      • Orang tersebut berjanji untuk membayar semula deposit dengan atau tanpa faedah atau pulangan (faedah atau pulangan pelaburan dijanjikan untuk dibayar dalam suatu tempoh masa dan dalam bentuk wang atau nilaian wang, sebagainya); dan
      • Orang tersebut berjanji untuk membayar semula deposit pokok apabila pembayaran balik dituntut atau pada suatu masa atau mengikut hal keadaan yang dipersetujui oleh atau bagi pihak orang yang membuat bayaran itu dan orang yang menerimanya, dengan apa-apa balasan berupa wang atau nilaian wang (pembayaran pelaburan pokok adakalanya dimasukkan sekali dalam faedah atau pulangan tetap yang dijanjikan).
      • Menawarkan kepada pelabur atau orang awam peluang untuk berurus niaga mata wang asing dengan syarikat induk (yang kononnya mempunyai lesen sah untuk berurus niaga mata wang asing di luar negara);
      • Memudahkan urus niaga mata wang asing dengan menyediakan akses kepada laman web syarikat induk dan kemudahan urus niaga melalui internet;
      • Menggaji lepasan siswazah sebagai eksekutif pemasaran dan mempengaruhi mereka supaya membuat ahli keluarga mereka membuat pelaburan;
      • Mengarahkan pelabur-pelabur untuk mendeposit wang pelaburan sama ada ke dalam akaun bank syarikat induk atau akaun bank pihak ketiga; dan
      • Mempengaruhi pelabur-pelabur untuk menambah jumlah pelaburan (“panggilan margin”) atau menghadapi risiko kehilangan pelaburan mereka .
  4. Skim pengambilan deposit secara haram

    Amaran Untuk Pelabur

    • Aktiviti pengambilan deposit secara haram selalunya berselindung dengan pelbagai cara untuk menipu orang awam menjadi mangsa skim pelaburan haram, antaranya, melalui tawaran pemberian emas dan barang berharga yang lain sebagai sebahagian daripada pulangan yang dijanjikan. Selain itu, orang ramai juga disogok dengan dakwaan bahawa deposit itu diterima sebagai pinjaman kepada syarikat.

    •  Aktiviti pengambilan deposit secara haram seringkali digambarkan mampu memberi kadar faedah atau pulangan yang tinggi atau tidak realistik dalam suatu masa yang singkat berbanding dengan institusi-institusi berlesen yang lain. Bagaimanapun, skim-skim seperti ini tidak boleh bertahan lama;

    •  Jangka hayat skim-skim seperti ini bergantung kepada penyertaan pelabur baru di mana dana pelaburan yang diterima akan digunakan untuk pembayaran dividen kepada pelabur lama. Sekiranya syarikat pengendali gagal mendapatkan pelabur baru, skim ini akan gagal kerana ketiadaan sumbangan dana dari pelabur baru.

    •  Pada permulaannya, pelabur-pelabur awal akan dibayar pulangan pelaburan seperti yang dijanjikan. Bagaimanapun, akhirnya pengendali akan melarikan diri dengan wang deposit yang dipungut apabila pengendali mendapati skim akan mengalami kegagalan yang akhirnya menjadikan pelabur rugi.

    Skim urus niaga mata wang asing haram

    Urus niaga mata wang asing dengan seseorang, selain daripada seorang yang diberi kuasa, yang tidak mendapat kebenaran oleh Pengawal Pertukaran Wang Asing di bawah AKPW sering:

    Amaran untuk PelaburPengendali skim mata wang asing haram akan cuba menyakinkan bakal-bakal pelabur dengan strategi pasaran yang menjanjikan pulangan segera dan tinggi-

    •  Melalui penampilan imej yang profesional dan bereputasi dengan barisan pekerja yang berpakaian segak, keadaan pejabat yang bercirikan teknologi tinggi dan kemudahan IT yang terkini yang memudahkan pelabur-pelabur untuk mengendalikan akaun-akaun mereka melalui internet;

    •  Dengan peralatan urus niaga seperti suatu skrin berita yang menunjukkan pergerakan dalam kadar pertukaran untuk memberi gambaran bahawa sesuatu perniagaan yang profesional dan sah di sisi undang-undang sedang dijalankan;

    •  Kebiasaannya, pelabur juga dikehendaki untuk menandatangani satu kontrak urus niaga dengan syarikat. Kontrak-kontrak ini sering tidak ditandatangani oleh syarikat. Ini bermakna tiada tindakan boleh diambil oleh pelabur terhadap syarikat kerana tiada kontrak formal yang mengikat.

      • Ingatlah pada kata hikmat ini – Sesuatu yang menguntungkan tetapi seakan terlalu mustahil untuk diterima akal, berkemungkinan besar merupakan satu penipuan;
      • Berurusan hanya dengan institusi kewangan berlesen dan peniaga mata wang asing yang di beri kuasa;
      • Semak terlebih dahulu dengan pihak berkuasa yang berkaitan;
      • Jangan gopoh atau membiarkan diri dipaksa untuk melabur;
      • Berhati-hatilah dengan pelaburan yang dibuat melalui internet;
      • Berwaspada dengan sebarang peluang pelaburan yang tidak bertulis; dan
      • Jika suatu pelaburan telah dibuat, simpan kesemua dokumen yang berkaitan dengan pelaburan dan komunikasi dengan selamat.

Benjamin Graham’s Timeless Investing Principles

Benjamin Graham‘s Timeless Investing Principles

“To achieve satisfactory investment results is easier than most people realize; to achieve superior results is harder than it looks.” – these were the wise words of  Benjamin Graham, the father of two fundamental investment disciplines – security analysis and value investing. Not a name unheard of in the investing world, Benjamin Graham was an icon for many, including William J. Ruane, Irving Kahn. One of his most loyal and notable disciples however, was Warren Buffet.There is no better way to learn how to make it big in the investing world than learning it from the best and it doesn’t get any better than Benjamin Graham.

Benjamin Graham was born in UK in 1894 and moved to US when he was eight and a half years old. Although he came from a poor family, he was exceptionally bright at young age. He graduated from Columbia University in 1914 and started his investment career by joining Wall Street as a financial analyst. He established his first private investment organisation, the Benjamin Graham Joint Account, at the age of thirty two. During the Great Depression, between 1929 and 1932, he lost 70 percent of his $2.5 million fund. Although some of his clients gave up, his fund managed to survive the worst and by 1935, he recovered all the losses.

What did Graham consider as critical elements to successful investing?
Here, we will briefly go through the investing principles propounded by Benjamin Graham.

Understand the difference between investment and speculation
Graham established a clear distinction between an investment and a speculation. To qualify as an investment, it must go through thorough analysis, must have a good margin of safety and a satisfactory return. Speculation on the other hand merely involves timing and profiting from market fluctuation.

  • Do a detailed analysis as stocks represent a share of business
    In the process of doing a detailed analysis, investors need to have the mindset of treating stock purchasing as if they own a piece of the business, to evaluate stock price from the perspective of the underlying asset value, financial strength and future earning prospect, instead of focusing on the short-term fluctuation of the market. This is regarded as the intrinsic value of the company.
  • Build Margin of Safety
    Graham’s most famous and influential motto is ‘margin of safety’. The experiences that he cumulated during the frenzy Great Depression made a deep impression on him.  He became a very cautious investor as a result, whose number one investment concern is the safety of investment principal. If the intrinsic value of a stock is RM1 and you buy the stock at the price of 67 cents, then your margin of safety is 33%. This serves as a cushion to your investment in the case of a market down turn or to provide you with a margin of error in calculating the intrinsic value, so that the chances of you losing your principal are at the lowest.
  • Hava a  realistic return objective
    The objective of making an investment is to make money. However, Graham warns against aiming for unrealistic return objective. If you expect abnormally high return from your investment, chances are you will be exposing yourself to unnecessary risk in order to achieve your return objective, which will become speculation instead of investment. There is no short cut or quick ways to making money. Graham’s way of investing is to set a realistic return objective and making investments based on sound investment principles and having the discipline to follow through.
  • Treat the market as servant, not master
    Graham believes that risks and returns do not increase proportionately. He sees the opportunities in market volatilities. To him, the stock market is manic-depressive and investors should go for a bargain hunt during a market down turn. The risk of investment can be significantly reduced if investors understand the business and apply good judgment based on the above first three elements in searching for good fundamental stocks, which are temporarily depressed due to market reasons.

However, he discourages making decisions based on any form of forecast and timing of the market. Instead, the decision making should be made based on price attractiveness. Graham’s stock selection criteria include a price-to-book ratio of 1.5 times, price-to-earnings ratio of below 20 times and debt-to-equity ratio of 0.5 times.

From the above, you can observe that Graham advocates defensive investing approaches. This, later become the foundation of the investing principles of the famous investing guru, Warren Buffet, who learned about the quantitative screening process from Graham while working in Graham’s company.

However, for a lay person to successfully apply Graham’s approaches, you need to be prepared to overcome some hurdles. You need to do a lot of hard work and have good accounting knowledge in order to dissect the financial information provided in the annual report or other financial publications. In addition to that, you will have to be highly sensitive to any news that will affect the performance of the company or the relevant industries. Having the ability to derive your own conclusion from your research, you will also then need to have the determination and faith in your work so as to prevent yourself from being blown away by the market.

DINAR EMAS

Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahath...

Image via Wikipedia

DINAR EMAS

|

Multi-level marketing unit to remain star performer

Multi-level marketing unit to remain star

performer

Published: 2008/10/30

The multi-level marketing division contributes more than 70 per cent of the group’s total net profit and revenue

HAI-O Enterprise Bhd, a multi-level marketing (MLM) company and a Chinese herbs retailer, expects revenue to grow five per cent this fiscal year, helped mainly by its MLM business.

It almost doubled its revenue to RM373.82 million in the year ended April 30 2008, from RM189.35 million a year ago, thanks to its MLM business which almost tripled to RM281.6 million.

The MLM division contributes more than 70 per cent of the group’s total net profit and revenue and should remain the group’s top performer this year.

“Many people are now looking for a second job and the easiest way is to take up direct selling,” managing director Tan Kai Hee said after the company’s annual general meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

So far this year, the MLM division has signed up some 2,000 new members every month. It now has 70,000 members, of which one-fifth are active.

The company more than doubled its net profit to RM49.12 million in the last fiscal year, and expects net profit to stay flat.

“Our bottomline will be affected due to weaker ringgit, and higher operating and raw material costs,” said Tan.

Meanwhile, Hai-O’s plans to expand to Indonesia remains “on track”, and is expected to have its presence in Indonesia early next year.

“Currently, we are going through the product registration as well as testing of the computer systems,” said Tan.

Hai-O, which also plans to launch five new health food products by the end of this year, said that all its health food products have met the necessary Health Ministry requirements.

The company, with more than RM50 million cash in hand, said it will also continue to look for good investment opportunities.

“We believe that when there’s crisis, there’s opportunity too. (Nevertheless), we are conservative, and will (only) make investments that benefit our shareholders,” he said.

The company is putting on hold its plan to build a new factory, warehouse and office and will review the plan sometime next year.
